ITIL is a framework of guidance for IT service management, owned by PeopleCert, which completed its acquisition of AXELOS in June 2021 according to secondary sources [Wikipedia]. ITIL 4 was released in February 2019 and describes 34 management practices, also according to secondary sources [Wikipedia]. PeopleCert's ITIL 4 Foundation syllabus covers 'the Service Value Chain, guiding principles, and governance', the 'seven guiding principles of ITIL 4' and four dimensions: 'organisations and people, information and technology, partners and suppliers, and value streams and processes' [PeopleCert ITIL 4 Foundation].
It is the newest version, which PeopleCert describes as 'AI-native by design' [PeopleCert ITIL]. PeopleCert lists modules named ITIL Product, ITIL Service, ITIL Experience, ITIL Strategy and ITIL Transformation, plus 'ITIL AI Governance (Version 5)' and an 'ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5)' for people who hold the earlier certification. Secondary sources date the announcement to January 2026 [Wikipedia]; the PeopleCert pages we read give no exact launch date.
Our ITIL criterion counts the practices a service desk tool supports most directly:

| Service desk | Claim on the vendor's page | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freshservice | "Gold Accredited Tool Vendor with certification across 14 ITIL practices"; "PinkVERIFY-certified across six ITSM processes" | [Freshservice] |
| ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus | 14 ITIL-certified practices and 14 PinkVERIFY-certified practices | [ManageEngine] |
| Ivanti Neurons for ITSM | 14 ITIL 4-certified practices, including configuration, change, release and deployment and service level management | [Ivanti] |
| Jira Service Management | A PinkVERIFY logo on the features page | [Atlassian features] |
| Halo (formerly HaloITSM) | "ITIL-aligned workflows" | [Halo] |
| SysAid | No ITIL or PinkVERIFY certification claim on the pages we read | [SysAid pricing] |
| ServiceNow ITSM | Incident, change, problem and request management on one platform; no certification count recorded on the pages we read | [ServiceNow ITSM] |
| Zendesk for IT (Employee Service), monday service | No ITIL or PinkVERIFY certification claim recorded on the pages we read | [Zendesk Employee Service pricing] [monday service pricing] |
Counts are not directly comparable. 'Practices' and 'processes' are counted under different schemes, and a certification says a tool supports a practice, not that your configuration follows it.
No. Freshservice states certification across 14 ITIL practices, but problem, change and release management are on Pro and Enterprise [Freshservice pricing]. ServiceDesk Plus states 14 certified practices, but change, release and problem management need Enterprise or paid add-ons on lower editions [ManageEngine pricing]. Jira Service Management shows a PinkVERIFY logo and puts change management on Premium [Atlassian pricing]. Check the certified practice against the plan you would buy; the plan gates lesson lists them.
Not in a way we can measure yet. The vendor certifications we recorded on 27 September 2026 refer to ITIL practices and ITIL 4, not to ITIL (Version 5). The new version's AI governance module is still a useful prompt: ask each vendor how AI actions on tickets are logged, reviewed and reversed, because that is the part of an AI service desk an auditor will ask about.
The what is ITSM guide has the longer explanation of ITIL 4, and the glossary defines each term.
