Service desk vs help desk: what is the difference?

Last reviewed 27 September 2026 · Service Desk Compare reviewers

What is a help desk?

A help desk is a support function focused on break-fix work: someone reports that something is broken, and the help desk fixes it or passes it on. Success is measured by response and resolution times. Many help desks start as a shared inbox or a ticketing tool.

Terms used here are defined in the ITSM glossary.

What is a service desk?

A service desk is the single point of contact between an IT team and the people it serves. Beyond fixing issues, it fulfils service requests from a catalog, keeps requesters informed against service levels, and connects to problem, change and configuration management so that recurring issues are fixed at the root. 'Service Desk' appears as a practice in the ITIL practice lists vendors publish, for example Ivanti's list of ITIL 4-certified practices [Ivanti page].

What is an AI help desk in 2026?

An AI help desk uses AI agents to log, categorise, route and resolve tickets, and to keep knowledge current. Every vendor in our ranking now documents some AI, but they automate different stages. Our Lifecycle Automation Census shows Halo documenting all six stages we track, Ivanti, monday service and Zendesk documenting five, and closure as the least documented stage overall.

Which tools lean help desk and which lean service desk?

Zendesk and monday service score at or near the top on requester experience and AI but lowest on ITIL coverage, which places them closer to the help desk end with strong AI. ServiceNow, Ivanti and ServiceDesk Plus score highest on ITIL coverage and are full service desks. Freshservice, Halo, JSM and SysAid sit between, with full ITIL practice support on some or all plans.

What do readers ask about service desks and help desks?

Is a service desk the same as a help desk?

No. A help desk handles break-fix support; a service desk is the single point of contact for all IT services, including requests and links to problem and change management.

Does a small IT team need a service desk?

Not always. A team handling mainly incidents and requests can start with a help desk and move to a service desk tool when it needs a catalog, SLAs, change control or a CMDB.

What is AI ticketing?

AI ticketing uses AI to categorise, route and sometimes resolve tickets automatically. Our census tracks which vendors document it at each stage.
