What is IT service management (ITSM)?

What is a CMDB, and do I need one?

A CMDB stores configuration items and the relationships between them, so you can see which services an incident or change affects. Teams that run formal change control or impact analysis usually need one; desks that mainly handle requests and incidents often start with an asset list. Read more

What are the six stages of a service desk ticket?

How much does IT service desk software cost per agent?

Published prices on 27 September 2026 run from free (Jira Service Management for up to three agents, ServiceDesk Plus for two technicians) to $99 per agent per month (Freshservice Pro and Zendesk Suite Professional). ServiceNow ITSM and Ivanti Neurons for ITSM do not publish prices. Read more

Which service desks publish their prices?

Freshservice, Halo, Jira Service Management, ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus, SysAid, Zendesk for IT (Employee Service) and monday service publish at least one price. ServiceNow ITSM and Ivanti Neurons for ITSM do not. Read more

Which plan includes change management?

It varies: Pro and Enterprise at Freshservice, Premium and Enterprise at Jira Service Management, Enterprise or a paid add-on at ServiceDesk Plus, both plans at SysAid and the single plan at Halo. Zendesk does not list change management on its Employee Service pricing page, and monday service does not document it on the pages we reviewed. Read more

Can I try a service desk before buying?

monday service offers a 14-day trial and Halo a 30-day trial with all features; Jira Service Management has a free plan for three agents and ServiceDesk Plus a free edition for two technicians. ServiceNow ITSM and Ivanti Neurons for ITSM show no public price or self-serve trial on the pages we read. Read more

Which service desks can run on-premises?

ServiceDesk Plus is available on-premises and in the cloud, Ivanti can be deployed in the cloud, on-premises or hybrid, and Jira Service Management has a Data Center edition for self-managed environments. On-premises is not mentioned on the Halo pages we read, and SysAid's pages do not state a deployment model. Read more

How does Service Desk Compare score?

How does Service Desk Compare score service desks?

Seven criteria are scored 0 to 10 from public vendor pages and weighted for mid-size IT teams: ITIL practice coverage (15%), Automation and AI assistance (18%), Time to value (18%), Configuration management (CMDB) (12%), Usability for non-IT requesters (14%), Integrations (10%) and Pricing transparency (13%). Totals are computed from those weights and rounded to one decimal. That is the full ITSM ranking. Read more

What is the business-teams ranking?

It is the lead ranking, for teams that need a service desk but do not run ITIL processes or a CMDB, such as HR, facilities, operations and lean IT teams. It uses the same scores and weights automation and AI assistance, time to value, usability for non-IT requesters, integrations and pricing transparency at 20% each; ITIL coverage and CMDB are shown for information only. Teams that need ITIL change and problem management or a CMDB should use the full ITSM ranking. Read more

No. Scores are desk research from public vendor material: pricing pages, product pages and documentation, last reviewed in September 2026. We did not run hands-on tests, demos or vendor interviews. Read more

Do G2 ratings affect the scores?

No. G2 figures appear on some pages as context, with a link to G2. They are not inputs to the scores, and we do not show G2 star averages or review counts. Read more

Can I change the weights?

Yes. The calculator lets you set your own weight for each of the seven criteria and re-ranks the nine service desks, with list-price costs for your agent count. Read more
